![]() If you do the depth of field calculations you’ll get a similar number with this setup, as you would with a full frame camera shooting an 85mm lens at f/2.8.” And because you’re shooting the same scene from the same distance at a focal length of 50mm as opposed to 85mm you have less depth of field. “This 50mm lens on your apa-c camera will have about the same field of view as an 85mm lens on a full frame camera. When people talk about “equivalent” apertures, it’s worth rephrasing what they’re saying in your own head for clarity.įor example, if someone says: “this 50mm f 1.8 lens on your aps-c camera is the equivalent of a 85mm f/2.8 lens on a full frame camera” There is no difference between shooting a lens on an APS-C camera - and shooting on a full frame camera and cropping the image down (the pixel count may change depending on the exact sensor but while that may change how we think about printing, it has little to do with equivalence when taking photos).į/1.8 is f1.8 - your exposure triangle is unaffected regardless of whether you use the 50mm or 85mm lens (unless the meter changes because the scene changes due to the different fov, which can go either way). The only difference is the sensor is smaller. Nothing actually changes in the lens when moving lenses between formats - the aperture is the same, the focal length is the same, the intensity of the light being projected through the lens is the same. This is the problem with “equivalence” when comparing formats (full frame vs aps-c for example).
